John “Michael” Hindsman appeared alone & without family at age 19 in the Georgia Salzburger community in Ebenezer, Effingham County, GA. He was first a tanner & a planter (Salzburger Records). He married Anna Ursula Heckel on 22 Jan 1771 in the Zion Lutheran Church (in the carefully recorded Salzburger community records). Marriage records state that John “Michael” Hindsman was at “age 21”. At age 18 he dropped the use of his (baptismal) Saint’s name John and was always the called only Michael Hindsman. This was a common cultural occurrence. In 1776-77 the small German Salzburger community was over run by British Troops & Michael & Ursula Hindsman with son Peter “Israel” & daughter Judith Fled across the Savannah River to the settlement in Wilkes County (not yet named). He acquired 350 acres of prime land along the north fork of Kettle Creek & there he & Ursula raised Israel & Judith. ** His parents arrived at Philadelphia, PA in 1734 from the Ulm region of today’s Germany (see “The Germans of Colonial Georgia” Geo. F. Jones publ. 1999). That name was listed in some records as “Heinsmann” & other varied spellings. The family sailed from Rotterdam aboard the ship “Hope” captioned by Daniel Reid (Palatine Transport Records). A number of Georgia Salzburger Society Records were transcribed & published by Geo. F. Jones & Sheryl Exley.
