In 1812, in the year that John Molson was born, on June 1st, U.S. President James Madison asked the U.S. Congress to declare war on the United Kingdom. Thus began the War of 1812. Great Britain tried to avert the war as they saw it as a way for the U.S. to annex Canada - and they were simultaneously involved in a war with France.

In 1824, at the age of just 12 years old, John was alive when on March 11th, the United States War Department created the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) as a part of the War Department - without authorization from Congress. It had previously been called the Office of Indian Trade.
