John was my grandfather (my mother's father) whom I never met. All I really know is that he spent time (possibly 15 years) in prison. Possibly Folsom San Quentin. I'm not sure what he was sentenced for but I have a vague memory that it may have had something to do with writing bad checks. I don't think it was anything more serious than that; although, if it really was a 15-year sentence, that seems awfully stiff penalty for writing bad checks. But all I know about Folsom Prison is the Johnny Cash song. Somewhere I have a letter to my teenage mother that he wrote and sent from prison. I haven't looked at in several years. Mostly I think it was him congratulating her on graduating from high school.
