John Obrien Wallace of Gemb Australia was born in 1913 to John Cooper Wallace and Elizabeth (O'brien) Wallace. He had siblings Mary Elizabeth Wallace, Henry Albert Wallace, Margaret (Wallace) Kirby, William Wallace, John Henry Wallace, Alfred Ernt Edward Wallace, Andrew Smith Wallace, and James Eadie Wallace. John Wallace died at age 60 years old in 1973 in Gemb.

In 1913, in the year that John Obrien Wallace was born, the Philippine–American War ended for good in June. While the official end of the war was in 1902, fighting continued for several years. An estimated 200,000 to 250,000 total Filipino civilians died and although the U.S. viewed its role as a colonial presence as one of preparing the Philippines for independence, American colonization drastically changed the character off the culture. The Catholic Church was no longer the state religion and English became the primary language of the government.

In 1928, John was just 15 years old when aviatrix Amelia Earhart, age 31, became the first woman to fly solo across North America and back in August. In June, she had been part of a 3 man crew that flew the Atlantic Ocean but since she had no instrument training, she couldn't fly the plane - she kept the flight log. The North American flight became one of her many "firsts" as a female pilot.
