John Opie 1863 - 1904

John Opie was born in 1863 in Avoca, Pyrenees Shire County, VIC Australia to Solomon Opie and Mary (Bailey) Opie, and had siblings Thomas Bailey Opie, Solomon Opie Jr., and Elizabeth Jane (Opie) Field. He was in a relationship with Eliza Ellen (Roberts) Aston, and had children Ruby Ida (Opie) Bolt, Hilda Margaret Opie, Leslie Norman Opie, and Mabel (Opie) Parker. John Opie died at age 40 years old in October 1904, and was buried at Boroondara General Cemetery 430 High St, in Kew, Boroondara City County.

In 1863, in the year that John Opie was born, on January 1st, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The Proclamation made the abolition of slavery in the Confederate states an official war goal. It also immediately freed 50,000 slaves, with the rest freed as Union armies advanced into Confederate states. The Proclamation wasn't a Congressional law - it was an Executive Order.

In 1877, by the time he was only 14 years old, on July 14th, strikes and resulting riots began at the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad. A sympathy strike and rioting began in Pittsburgh and a worker's rebellion began in St. Louis, then spread to other cities. 100 people were killed before the strikes ended when President Rutherford B. Hayes sent federal troops to each of the cities involved.
