John P Broughton of New London County, Connecticut United States was born on October 23, 1919 in Springfield, Greene County, MO to Patrick Francis Broughton and Mary Agnes (Sullivan) Broughton. He married Jean M. (Gordijn) Broughton on May 13, 1948 in Maastricht, Maastricht County, Limburg Netherlands, and they were married until John's death on October 19, 2011. He had children Ann Mary Broughton, Thomas Patrick Broughton, Patricia Jean (Broughton) Stazick, and John Gerard Broughton. John Broughton was buried in November 2011 in East Lyme.

In 1919, in the year that John P Broughton was born, the "Black Sox Scandal" rocked baseball fans during the World Series. Eight players on the Chicago White Sox were accused of throwing the World Series, thus allowing the Cincinnati Reds to win, and making money off of the losses. All of the players were found not guilty by a jury but the fallout lasted for decades. The players were banned from baseball even though they were found innocent.

In 1921, at the age of just 2 years old, John was alive when in May, the Emergency Quota Act - or Emergency Immigration Act - was passed. The law restricted the number of immigrants to 357,000 per year. It also established an immigration quota in which only 3 per cent of the total population of any ethnic group already in the USA in 1910, could be admitted to America after 1921. Although the Act was supposed to be temporary, it stayed in effect until 1965.
