J P Norman's History: 1917

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

I found a postcard that Private J P Norman posted from the trenches in France in 1916. He sent this to an aunt of mine and it was only upon her death in 1982 that we discovered her lost love. He was hoping to hear from my aunt once more and confirmed that he was Private J. P Norman, 4th Batallion, 9 Platoon of the Royal Berkshire Regiment. Clearly the night before he wrote the postcard had been a 'near miss' in the trenches in France from the details he gave. Sadly, when I researched his name online I discovered he died in action a year later in 1917 and never saw my aunt May again. She never spoke of him - I wish she had as she had obviously kept him close to her heart until she died. I found a photograph of him on a BBC Remembrance Website a few minutes ago and it is very moving especially as it is now 11th November as I write this.
