While serving with the US Army in World War II, John was a prisoner of war in Germany from 1944-1945. Upon his return to the states, he married Mary Jane Lankford (1926-2005) on January 27, 1946 in Browns , Illinois. The couple had children together.

Previously right hand man to boss Johnny Torrio, Capone took over when Torrio was shot and severely injured and decided to resign.
