    The Telegraph, Brisbane. Qld. 14th October 1922. DEATH OF MR. JOHN WARDLEY. A QUEENSLAND PIONEER. Mr. John Wardley, who fifty years ago was an alderman, and who for over sixty years had lived in Queensland, passed away on the 13th of October, at the venerable age of 91. An Englishman Mr. Wardley came to Australia about 1853 and landed in Victoria. He saw the arrival of the first Governor of that State, ( Sir Charles Hotham ). After a year or two in Victoria he had a trip home with his wife and two children, but returned after a year, and coming to Queensland remained in this state for the remainder of his days, with the exception of six months spent in another trip to the old country. In Brisbane he was one time a butcher in a large way in Leichard street. About ten years ago he decided to go in for pastoral work, and obtained land in Coombabah, which now forms part of Southport, and at Pimpama. He suffered financially in the big slump of 1891, and eventually returned to Brisbane. A year ago illness necessitated his admission to the Diamantina Hospital, where he died. He retained his faculties to the very end. Mr. Wardley was a veteran Freemason, and the journals of 51 years ago that he was an officer of the North Australian Lodge in Brisbane. He had a family of 13, two of whom were born in Victoria and the others in Brisbane. Seven daughters survive him, and there are 23 grand children and six great-grandchildren, all in Brisbane.
