John Robert Deans 1855 - 1922

John Robert Deans of Talbot Australia was born in 1855 to John William Deans and Agnes Carol Paterson Deans. He had a brother William Charles Deans. He married Frances Esther (Bradley), and had children Leila (Deans), Robert Bradley Deans, Janet Deans, John Francis Deans, Geoffrey Matthews Deans, and Arthur Deans. John Deans died at age 67 years old in 1922 in Talbot.

In 1855, in the year that John Robert Deans was born, on March 3rd, Congress appropriated $30,000 to create the U.S. Camel Corps. The idea was to use camels as pack animals in the Southwest and 34 camels were bought. But the Army wasn't enthusiastic about the idea and after the Civil War the Camel Corps was entirely abandoned.

In 1865, at the age of just 10 years old, John was alive when on April 14th, President Abraham Lincoln was shot while attending a comedy at Ford's Theatre - Our American Cousin - in Washington, D.C. Actor and Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth shot him 4 days after Lee had surrendered. The President died the next day. At almost the same time that Lincoln was shot, US Secretary of State William H. Seward and his family were attacked at home by another conspirator and Confederate sympathizer.
