He had a sister, Elsie Winnifred Stringer and grew up in Lacombe, Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. He then moved to the United States living in California. John enlisted in the US military on March 26, 1942 and gained naturalization on May 5, 1943 in California while he was living in Los Angeles, California. John married Carrie Irene Hembury (1924-2014) on may 5, 1948. They had two children together.
