    John Sherry Berwind II was born to John Sherry Berwind I (1889 - 1945) and Millicent Berwind (born 1891). He had seven siblings: May, John, Agnes Margaret, Christophe, Henrieta, and Bruno. John S. Berwind married Millicent Berwind (born 1891) and they had two daughters and two sons John Berwind was a veteran of World War II. He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1941.

In 1918, in the year that John S Jr Berwind was born, on November 1, an elevated train on the Brooklyn line of the subway - driven by an inexperienced operator because of a strike - tried to navigate a turn at 30mph. The limit on the curve was 6 mph. The 2nd and 3rd cars of the 5 car wooden train were badly damaged and at least 93 people were killed, making it the deadliest crash in New York subway history.
