  • Introduction

    The Australasian, Melbourne. 9th March 1929. VICTORIAN NEWS. A shocking fatality occurred at Landsborough West, Vic., on March 4. Mr. John Slorach, one of the best known farmers of the district, had gone to a paddock to obtain a waggon load of posts. When returning through a gate the waggon went into a rut, and Mr. Slorach slipped to the ground in front of the waggon; the front wheels of which passed over his neck, chest, and leg, killing him instantly.

In 1867, in the year that John Slorach was born, on March 30th, Alaska was bought by the US from Russia for $7.2 million dollars, which worked out to about 2 cents per acre. The newspapers called it "Seward's Folly" because United States Secretary of State William H. Seward negotiated the purchase and Alaska was seen as frozen, useless land.

In 1887, John was 20 years old when on July 1st, the assembly for the supports of the Eiffel Tower began . A wrought iron lattice tower, it was designed and built by Gustave Eiffel - who also contributed to the building of the Statue of Liberty. There are 18,000 pieces in the Eiffel Tower - which had to be built separately and then assembled in place - with rivets - to complete the Tower.
