He married Rosanna Amelia (Wrigglesworth) Stothers in 1903, and had children Vera May Stothers, John Keith Stothers, and Alan Arthur Stothers. John Stothers died at age 85 years old on February 19, 1954 at Stratford Victoria, Australia in Stratford.

In 1868, in the year that John Stothers Jr. was born, on July 9th, The Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified. The Fourteenth Amendment guaranteed African Americans full citizenship and equal protection under the law. It also gave all persons in the United States due process of law. The former Confederate states hotly contested the amendment but were forced to go along so that they could regain representation in Congress

In 1891, John was 23 years old when from March 9th through the 12th, a blizzard hit the south and west of England. Called the Great Blizzard of 1891, it led to snow drifts of up to 15 feet and killed 200 people and 6,000 animals. Fourteen ships sank.
