John Truly Fuqua of Effie, Avoyelles County, LA was born on August 3, 1908 to Monroe & Mary Sayes Fuqua. He was the parent of Melda Fuqua Deloach. He married Selma George Fuqua, and they had children Gary Kent Fuqua and Larry George Fuqua. John Fuqua died at age 87 years old on January 24, 1996, and was buried on January 26, 1996.

In 1928, when he was 20 years old, aviatrix Amelia Earhart, age 31, became the first woman to fly solo across North America and back in August. In June, she had been part of a 3 man crew that flew the Atlantic Ocean but since she had no instrument training, she couldn't fly the plane - she kept the flight log. The North American flight became one of her many "firsts" as a female pilot.
