    John Thomas Orpin was born in Kentucky to Colin Campbell Orpin (1883-1936) and Carrie Riffe (1887-1954) and had siblings Annie Louise (1907-1915), Erma Lucille McAllister (1909-1984), Harry William (1911-1982), Edna Lee Pell (1913-1978), Charles Arthur (1915-1989), Curtis Franklin (1919-2007), Elizabeth Nell Hoerner (1923-2012), Helen Bond Wehmeyer (1926-2002), and Collin Campbell Orpin Jr. (1928-2007). John enlisted in the United States Army on September 12th 1942 in Baltimore Maryland, and married Joyce Orpin. They had children Debbie, Rick, Tom, and Barbara.

In 1921, in the year that John T Orpin was born, hugely popular Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle, silent film star, was arrested for rape and manslaughter after an actress died following a party at his house. He was acquitted after three trials and the jury wrote a formal letter apologizing for the charges, but his career never recovered. His films were at first banned - the ban was lifted after a year - and he was mostly ostracized by the community. He died at 46..
