John Thomas William Pendlebury of Richmond, City of Yarra County, VIC Australia was born on September 5, 1904 in Jung Jung, Victoria to Richard Thomas Pendlebury and Ellen (Budge) Pendlebury. John Pendlebury had siblings Elsie May Pendlebury, Allen Robert Pendlebury, David Richard Pendlebury, and Albert Edward Pendlebury. He married Edith May Bloomfield Knight in 1928. He would also marry Elsie Annie Victoria Morrison in 1932. John Pendlebury died at age 51 years old on October 30, 1955 in Richmond, VIC.

In 1911, John was only 7 years old when the United States Supreme Court broke up Standard Oil in May. John D. Rockefeller established Standard Oil in 1870 and it was the largest oil refinery at the time. The Supreme Court found that Standard Oil of New Jersey (one of the many iterations of Standard Oil) was guilty of "monopolizing the petroleum industry through a series of abusive and anticompetitive actions". The Court broke up the several entities that comprised Standard Oil and they eventually became competing firms.
