He had siblings Jewel Vanderslice (1913-1914), Beniamin Curtis Vanderslice Jr (1915-2003), Infant Son Vanderslice who did not survive, (1917-1917), and Glyna Mae Vanderslice (1919-1999) as well as multiple half siblings. John enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 6, 1940, in Dallas, Texas. He joined the Infantry branch and started his military career as a Private in the Regular Army. He served in the US Air Force for over five years, as his discharge date was listed as November 30, 1945. On September 23, 1963 he married Verbena Violet Burton (1922–2005) in Dallas, Texas, USA and the couple had a daughter together.

The law restricted the number of immigrants to 357,000 per year.
