John Vipond was born in 1822 at Bonhill, in Dunbartonshire County, Scotland United Kingdom. He was in a relationship with Ann (Calder) Vipond, and had children Elizabeth (Vipond) Armstrong, Robina (Vipond) Watts, Thomas Borland Vipond, Henrietta Calder (Vipond) Mayhew, Archibald Vipond, Janet Vipond, and Jane Ann Vipond. John Vipond died at age 57 years old on March 8, 1880 in Springhurst, Wangaratta Rural City County, VIC Australia, and was buried at Springhurst Cemetery in Springhurst.

In 1822, in the year that John Vipond was born, on July 3rd, Charles Babbage published a proposal for a forerunner of the modern computer. Called a "difference engine", it calculated logarithms and trigonometric functions. Babbage wanted to eliminate the errors that occurred through the use of human "calculators" by creating a machine to do the same work. While a prototype was begun, it was never completed.
