    John Wandscheer was born on August 8, 1920 in Sioux Center, Sioux, Iowa, USA to parents Johan Hendrik "Henry" Wandscheer (1866-1954) and Elizabeth De Zeeuw (1881-1956). He had a sister Marie Elizabeth Wandscheer (1915-2002). He lived most of his early life in Sioux Center, Sioux, Iowa, USA before moving to Le Mars, Plymouth, Iowa, USA. As a young man, John registered for the draft on March 16, 1942, in Iowa, while working at Coleman Flying School. Then on April 26, 1944, at Camp Dodge Herrold, Iowa, at the age of 21, John made the decision to enlist in the military. Taking up the rank of Private, he joined the Air Corps as part of the Reserves. His civilian expertise as a mechanics and repairmen, specializing in airplanes, contributed to his role within the armed forces. On April 25, 1958 he married Martha Louise McConnell (1920–2011) in Jackson, Kansas City, Missouri, USA.
