John Wesley Singleton 1838 - 1924

John Wesley Singleton of Fitzroy South Australia was born on June 23, 1838 in Dublin, Dublin City County, Dublin Ireland to John Singleton and Isabel Daunt Singleton. John Singleton had a sister Mary Quinn Howes. He married Mary Agnes Sophia Singleton, and they had children Herbert Singleton, Charles Singleton, and Henry Singleton. He would also marry Sarah Grace Fordon Singleton, and they had children Kathleen Olive Fordon-Bellgrove, Cecil Wesley Fordon-Bellgrove, Clive Wesley Fordon- Bellgrove, and Basil Danby Fordon-Bellgrove. John Singleton died at age 86 years old in 1924 in Collingwood, VIC Australia.

In 1838, in the year that John Wesley Singleton was born, on January 11th in New Jersey, Samuel Morse and two others first publicly demonstrated Morse's new invention - the telegraph. Patented by Morse in 1837, the electrical telegraph used a code developed by him and his assistant, Samuel Vail, and sent a message two miles. In 1844, Morse broadcast from Washington DC to Baltimore Maryland the message "What hath God wrought" and the telegraph took off.

In 1848, he was just 10 years old when on November 1st, the first medical school for women - but founded by a man - opened in Boston. Called the Boston Female Medical College, and later merging with the Boston University School of Medicine, women could officially attend medical classes and be trained as physicians.
