The Burlingham Cemetery in Meigs County, Ohio is located on the side of a hill across from the Burlingham Church. Directions: Off U.S. Highway 33, turn east on State Road 681. Then take immediately the road that leads northerly off of 681. Follow that until you see signs on the left saying "Burlingham Cemetery" and "CR (County Road) 40." Take that road until you see the Burlingham Church ahead and the cemetery on the left, and can park on the driveway inside the cemetery.

The Burlingham Church can be seen here in the background. In the foreground, a Civil War standard and the American flag mark the grave of John William Carl, the eldest son of Wilson Carl & Elizabeth Swickard, who died 17 Aug 1901. He was buried as J. W. Carroll. On either side of his tombstone are five grave stones, the engravings now illegible, believed to be at the graves of John's parents, his brothers Jonathon and Stephen, and perhaps another of his siblings. Jonathon, Stephen, and their mother Elizabeth are known from their obituaries to be buried at this cemetery. Wilson's date of death and obituary have yet to be found.

Meigs County Cemetery Records only name one member of Wilson and Elizabeth's family as being buried at the Burlingham Cemetery, J. W. Carroll, [John William]. Following his name there is a sentence regarding four unreadable markers (for four unknowns). Although Wilson's date of death and burial place is unrecorded, it is reasonable to assume that he is buried with his wife. John's tombstone with three markers on the left and two on the right are under the trees in the first row perpendicular to the road on the extreme left side of the hill. The only one whose grave marker is somewhat readable is John's, whose tombstone was provided by the military. It is engraved "J. W. Carroll, Company F, 63rd Regiment, 2 Dec 1861-6 July 1862." The two small upright markers to the left of his I believe are those of his parents, Wilson and Elizabeth. Those are blackened with age and unreadable. Beyond those is one flat marker with no visible engraving on it (which may belong to one of their children who died in infancy). The two flat markers on the right side of John's also have no visible engraving on them. I believe those belong to his brothers Jonathon and Stephen.

Great picture! I am curious as to whom were the parents of John H. Carl and where they lived. The family reminds me of our Christopher Carl and his family, whose picture I also have on AncientFaces. He also had several sons and only one daughter.
Excuse me, it was Christopher's brother Leroy who had seven sons and one daughter.
