John William Mcelvogue 1897 - 1971

John William Mcelvogue of Fitzroy South Australia was born in 1897 in Fitzroy South, VIC to Edward Mcelvogue and Matda Mcdonald Mcelvogue. He had siblings Helen Alicia Mcelvogue, Mary Louisa Mcelvogue, Charles Fran Mcelvogue, Margaret Mcelvogue, George Mcelvogue, Percy Mcelvogue, and Herbert Henry Mcelvogue. He married Irene Sylvia (Allen) Mcelvogue in 1915, and had children John Martin, John Harold Mcelvogue, and Mavis Margaret Mcelvogue. John Mcelvogue died at age 73 years old on June 4, 1971 in Cheltenham, Victoria, and was buried at Cheltenham Memorial Cemetery in Cheltenham, Bayside City County.

In 1915, he married Irene Sylvia Allen (1898-1975) in Victoria, Australia. They lived in both Carlton, Victoria, Australia and Melbourne East, Victoria, Australia. The couple had children John Harold Francis (1916-1966), Doris Ellen Irene who did not survive (1917-1917), Mavis Margaret (1919-1959), George Edward who did not survive (1920-1920), and Leslie Walter McElvogue (1921-1991). John and Irene divorced in 1936 in Victoria, Australia.

In 1897, in the year that John William Mcelvogue was born, on September 21st, editor and publisher Francis P. Church responded to a letter to the editor from Virginia O'Hanlon, 8 years old. Virginia's father had told her that "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." So she wrote to the Sun, asking if there was a Santa Claus. Church responded with the now famous editorial "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus".

Called the National Defense Act of 1916, the national law expanded the National Guard and Army (the Army added an aviation unit), created the Reserves, and gave the President expanded authority to federalize the National Guard. It also allowed the government to stockpile, in advance, materiel to be used in wartime.
