John William Rerden of Fitzroy, City of Yarra County, VIC Australia was born on July 2, 1886 in Fitzroy to James William Rerdon and Elizabeth Harris Rerden. He had siblings Lilly Ethel Victoria Rerden, Charles Henry Rerden, and Samuel Rerden. He married Mary Ann (White) Rerden, and had children Lily May Rerden, Dorothy May Rerden, Mabel Christina Rerden, and William John Rerden. John Rerden died at age 30 years old on May 11, 1917 in Normandy France.

In 1886, in the year that John William Rerden was born, on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.

In 1893, at the age of just 7 years old, John was alive when on May 5th, a crash on the New York Stock Exchange started a depression that lasted 4 years. It was the beginning of the Panic of 1893.
