John Wohlers 1881 - 1950

John Wohlers of Geelong, Greater Geelong City County, VIC Australia was born in 1881 in Horsham, Horsham Rural City County to Albert Wohlers and Annie Ashwell Wohlers. He had siblings Caroline Wohlers, Elizabeth Mabel Wohlers, Benjamin Charles Wohlers, William Wohlers, Henry Aitkin Wohlers, Ann Honora Gusina (Wohlers) Groome, Stanley Wohlers, Albert Wohlers, August Frederick Wohlers, and Charles Herbert Wohlers. He married Agnes Mary Ann (Morris) Wohlers in 1909, and had children Adeline Wohlers, Ivy Lillian Wohlers, Gladys Isabell Wohlers, and John Edwin Wohlers. John Wohlers died at age 68 years old on July 30, 1950 in Geelong, Greater Geelong City County.

In 1881, in the year that John Wohlers was born, on November 19th, a meteorite landed a few miles southwest of Odessa, Ukraine. According to one report: "About 7 o'clock one morning a bright and serpentine tail of fire was seen passing over the town by the inhabitants of Odessa, and M. Prendel, editor of one of the Odessa papers, surmising that the phenomenon betokened a fall of meteorites, offered a reward to any person who would bring him one. Three days afterward a gentleman of Grossliebental brought him one which had been found by a peasant who was nearly frightened out of his senses at its fall. It fell beside him while at work in his field and buried itself .55 meters (almost 2 ft) into the ground." The recovered piece was about 17.5 lbs.

In 1896, John was only 15 years old when on January 28th, the first ticket for speeding - called "furious driving" - was issued. Walter Arnold of Kent England was fined 1 shilling plus costs - for going 8 mph. The speed limit was 2 mph.
