Jon Hugh Duckett was born on April 4, 1938. Often referred to as “Poppa D” enlisted in the United States Army in 1958 and quickly became one of the most renowned command sergeants major of his time. In his rise from private to command sergeant major he served in a variety of NCO leadership positions and assignments in the Military Police Corps. He has served as Command Sergeant Major for several different units including service with the Military Police Battalion at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. In 1987, he retired culminating a distinguished career of twenty-nine years of service to a grateful Nation. At the age of 58, God called this Sergeant Major of Color home on December 31, 1996, he received his final orders and passed and was buried with full military honors in the Crownsville Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, Maryland. This Sergeant Major of Color was well-liked by EVERYONE. He believed everyone needed to have integrity, be trustworthy, and do the right things.
