Introduction

He was the most wonderful man I knew at that young age. I was his only granddaughter to my knowledge - He was married to my grandmother Cora Deprospero (Townsend) and had at least 2 children with her. Cora had children by other men but they all called Joe dad. My mother was the youngest of his legitimate daughters and adored him, just as he did her. Grandpa and grandma ended up splitting and he moved from Elmira, NY to Auburn, NY. My mother went to live with him when she got older. He was a good man even after the split from my grandmother. As a child, I remember things like him giving me my first cabbage patch doll, my first banana seat bike, my first many things. He always made me feel so important and I think about him often. I'd love when he spoke Italian, I used to practice for hours after he taught me something. He always talked about him coming over on the "boat" from Italy and how they changed his name to make it more American. Sadly, many of the exact memories have faded. Grandpa Joe died when I was only 7 years old, it was a horrifying experience. He was told he had colon cancer and died soon after - not much time to mentally prepare for the entire family. It was a huge loss for all of us, including my grandmother who never really got over him.
