Joseph Edward Vetalice was born on October 28, 1919 in Oliver, Pennsylvania, USA to parents Joseph Vitilez/ Vetalice (1891-1948) and Anna Gursky (1894-1964). He had siblings John Albert Vetalice (1914-1999), Edward John Vetalice (1928-1974), and Ethel Vetalice (1932-2004). He also has a half sister Annie Vitalis (1917-1919). He grew up and resided in Menallan, Fayette, Pennsylvania. Joseph's military journey began on July 1, 1941, when he registered for the draft. At that time, he was 21 years old and considered the head of his household. I On April 13, 1942, at the age of 22, Joseph E. Vetalice enlisted in the Army in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He held the rank of Private and his enlistment branch was the Army, and he joined as part of the Selectees (Enlisted Men) component. After almost four years of dedicated service, Joseph was honorably discharged from the military on October 6, 1945. It marked the end of his military time, and he returned to civilian life. Joseph was married to Margaret Kroftchek (1921-2009). Together the couple had four children.

His enlistment branch was the Army, and he joined as part of the Selectees (Enlisted Men) component. During his military service, Joseph served in the Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers of the United States Army. After almost four years of dedicated service, Joseph was honorably discharged from the military on October 6, 1945. It marked the end of his military time, and he returned to civilian life.
