    Joseph Francis Charneski was born to Antoni Paul Czarniecki (1884 - 1949) and Bronislawa “Bertha” Staniszewska (1888 - 1940). His father was born in Poland, as was his mother. He had eleven siblings, including: Stanley, Alexander, Chezwah, Jane, Helen, John, Marie,and Leonard. Joseph Charneski married first, Kathleen Eames (1920 - 1998) in 1987 and then Mitsue Tokumitsu (1917 - 2006). Joseph and Mitsue had three children: one son and two daughters. A veteran of World War II, Joseph served in the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant from August of 1941 through October of 1945.

In 1917, in the year that Joseph F. Charneski was born, in April, the U.S. entered World War I, declaring war against Germany. President Wilson had previously declared neutrality in the war - a position supported by the majority of Americans - but after Germany declared that they would sink all ships trading with Great Britain and sunk U.S. ships, public opinion began to change. Then the Lusitania was sunk, killing 1,201 - including 128 Americans - and more U.S. ships were sunk. The U.S. could stand aside no longer.

In 1945, he was 28 years old when on February 19th, US Marines landed on the island of Iwo Jima and the Battle of Iwo Jima began. Lasting 5 weeks, it was some of the bloodiest and fiercest fighting in the Pacific theater during World War II. The occupying Japanese forces were heavily armed and there were 21,000 Japanese soldiers on the island at the beginning of the battle. Only 216 Japanese soldiers were captured afterwards - the rest had been killed in action or committed suicide. 6,800 American soldiers died but the Americans took control of the island.
