Joseph Vascik was buried at Mount Airy Cemetery 2800 Old Freeport Rd, in Natrona Heights, Allegheny County.

    Joseph F. Vascik Jr., 89, formerly of Tarentum, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010, at 11 a.m., in Alle-Kiski Medical Center, Allegheny Valley Hospital, Harrison Township. A resident of Tarentum for most of his life, he lived in Marienville for the past 25 years. He was born Sept. 2, 1921, in Blairsville, a son of the late Joseph F. Vascik Sr. and Agnes (Santi) Vascik. He was a member of Holy Martyrs Church, Tarentum, and St. Mary's, Crown, Pa. Prior to retirement, Mr. Vascik had been employed as a supervisor in the template department of PPG Industries in Creighton, where he worked for 37 years. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He was a retired Army master sergeant, having served with the Medical Detachment, 318th Infantry. He was awarded two Purple Hearts and was a life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He was a life member of Summit Hose Fire Company, Knights of Columbus, Crown, Pa., Tarentum VFW Post 5758, and life member of Brackenridge American Legion Post 226. He graduated from Tarentum High School and attended Technical School, Penn State, New Kensington. He was a Boy Scout leader for many years and received the Silver Beaver Award. He attended many jamborees with the Boy Scouts and was affiliated with Troop 316 in Tarentum. He was an avid reader and coin collector. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Virginia (Jannello) Vascik; the following sons and daughters: Arthur J. (Kathy) Vascik, of Buffalo Township, Bernadette Vascik, of La Mirada, Calif., Elaine (Joseph) McCullough, of Tarentum, Celeste Kennedy, of East Falmouth, Mass., Raymond (Judy) Vascik, of Freeport, Michael Vascik, of Bethel, Maine, and Gerald (Lora) Vascik, of Milton, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Stephen and Paul Vascik; and sisters, Helen Jendrejewski, Martha Stephens, Ann Dietz and Veronica Waugaman. Relatives and friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the DUSTER FUNERAL HOME INC., Tenth Avenue at Corbet Street, Tarentum, 724-224-1526. Blessing service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home, followed by a Christian Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Martyrs Church, Tarentum, by the Rev. Aaron J. Kriss, his pastor. Burial will be in Mt. Airy Cemetery, Natrona Heights. Summit Hose will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home for services. Military honors by Brackenridge American Legion Post 226.
