2 Memories, Stories & Photos about Joseph

Joe Crummett was my father. He was born and raised in Oklahoma on April 1, 1920 in Turkey Holler which was near Greenleaf Oklahoma. Greenleaf was razed by a tornado and no longer exists. His mother Delter Candis Harbison Crummett born January 1, 1880, gave birth to 13 children, but I only knew of 10. I believe the others were lost early on. She married John Henry Crummett born 1869 died 1925, when my father was 5 years old. My father was the youngest of all the children. Grandma raised her children alone until their move to California during or after the depression. John Henry owned hundreds of acres of farmland and grew vegetables which he truck farmed by mules. At the time of his death he owned 600 acres which was debt free and had $900 (a sizeable amount in those days) in the bank. Joe served in the US Army during World War II. He then settled in Northern California where he married Alice Morrow. They had 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls. They divorced in 1958, but Joe left the family about 10 years before that. I am the only child of Joe and Lola Winona Brantley Sanford. After leaving my mother Joe went to Chico California where he met and married his final wife, Dorothy. They settled in Antioch California until their final move to Pittsburg California (now Bay Point). Joe worked for the Department of the Navy at Port Chicago for 30 years. He retired from there. He was an avid fisherman and owned a boat for many years.

Joe the Fisherman
Joe LOVED to fish. During my youth we fished from the bank, but somewhere around my age of 9 he obtained a boat and trailer. We fished all over California and Arizona, many times on the Colorado River. When I was 8 we traveled to Ensenada Mexico to fish the Baja. Dad got stuck in the sand in the pick up and camper and was very upset that he had to pay some men to dig him out. When I was 5 we fished up at Big Bear Lake. Dad was patient, baited my hook and cast it out into the water. Shortly after it hit, I said "Daddy I got a fish." He said "no you couldn't have one I just cast you out. I again told him I had a fish. He took off the bluegill from my line, rebaited my hook, recast it into the water. I repeated the process. Before long I had 3 hooks, knew how to bait my own hook, cast my line and remove my own fish - he was so busy he did not have time to do his own fishing so he taught me all the processes. When I was 8 we were fishing on the Colorado River at dusk. I pulled in an 8 lb catfish all on my own because he refused to help me reel the cat in. We ate well that night and next day. I think he was sorry he took me fishing because I usually out fished him on every trip. He enjoyed fishing into his 70's.
