He was in a relationship with Margaret (McFadden) Hopkins, and had children William James Hopkins, John Hopkins, Margaret Hopkins, Sarah Hopkins, Annie Hopkins, Jane Hopkins, Roderick Hopkins, Joseph Hopkins, and Eliza Hopkins. Joseph Hopkins died at age 73 years old in 1876.

In 1803, in the year that Joseph Hopkins was born, on March 1st, Ohio became the 17th state of the United States. Because Congress never passed a resolution declaring Ohio a state, however, it wasn't until 1953 that Ohio retroactively became an official state.

In 1811, by the time he was merely 8 years old, on November 7th, the Battle of Tippecanoe was fought. American troops led by William Henry Harrison - then Governor of the Indiana Territory, later the 9th President of the United States - defeated the Native American warriors. A confederacy of Native American tribes opposed U.S. expansion into Indian Territory. but Tecumseh was gone, recruiting troops, and there was no military leader on the Native American side. The battle lasted 2 hours.
