Joseph Isadore Lieberman was born on February 24, 1942 in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut United States to Marcia (Manger) Lieberman and Henry Joseph Lieberman, and has siblings Rietta Helen Miller and Ellen Phyllis Lieberman. He married Elizabeth Louise Haas on December 20, 1965 in Stamford, Fairfield County and they later divorced in 1981 in Stamford. They had children Matthew Adam Lieberman and Rebecca Heather Lieberman. He would also marry Hadassah (Freilich) Lieberman on March 20, 1983 in Stamford, Fairfield County. They had a child Hana Rachel Lieberman.

In 1942, in the year that Joseph Isadore Lieberman was born, from January 7th through April 9th, the Battle of Bataan was fought in the Philippines. At the end of the battle, the U.S. and Filipino forces surrendered and a three-year occupation of the Philippines by Japan began. Between 60,000 and 80,000 American and Filipino soldiers surrendered and were marched around 60 to 69 miles - most were beaten, abused, or killed. Named the Bataan Death March, it was later declared to be a war crime.
