Clennan married Georgina Agnes Cahill (1921 - 2007) on June 28th, 1947 in Hempstead, New York and they had four children: Joseph, born 1948; Michael, born 1949; Patricia "Patsy", born 1950, and Mary Georgina. On his 1942 World War II draft card, Joseph was described as being 6 feet tall and as weighing 180 pounds. He had hazel eyes, black hair, and a "light" complexion.

Surviving are wife; daughters, Patricia, Mary Georgina Clennan; sons, Joseph T. and Michael Clennan; parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Joseph C. Clennan, Montgomery, Ohio; sisters, Mrs. E. O. Qullian, Chamblee; Mrs. T. Cooke, Detroit; brother Mr. James L. Clennan of Montgomery. The rosary will be said Monday evening at 7 p.m., at our chapel, Chamblee Chapel Funeral Directors, Chamblee, Georgia. - The Atlanta Constitution (Atlanta, Georgia) Monday, May 20, 1957 on page 22.
