My father was a man loved by many. He came from a large family, yet pushed them away and refused to speak to them or visit. Some of us suspect that he had some health issues that he would not admit to. I believe he felt that he was invincible, when he was instead allowing himself to rot from the inside out. Nothing anyone said would convince him that he had problems, nor (in his eyes) was there ever anything wrong with his children.
My greatest regret is not telling him how I really felt: that even though I loved him dearly I was very afraid of him because of past events. He was very foolish to think that everything was fine and that he did not need help even though his children begged him to get help.
When he was not drunk, he would do fun things with my sister and me. I still remember the amazing snow forts and snow sculptures he made for us. His most impressive piece of work was a snow soldier, which collapsed as he was adding the details to the boots. He also created sleds out of roofing material (those could zip down a hill in seconds!), a cross bow out of an old snowboard, and many smaller sculptures made out of old budweiser cans.
I wish he would have taken what we said to heart; maybe, if he had listened, he would still be here today to see what his daughters have accomplished.
