Joseph Mazner was born on August 22, 1918 to Gustaf Mazner and Catherine (Benzala) Mazner, and had siblings John Mazner, Edward J Mazner, Louis Mazner, Anna Marie (Mazner) Peterson, Helen (Mazner) Studden, Margarette Ann (Mazner) Miller, Gus Louis Mazner, and Katherine V Mazner. Joseph Mazner died at age 56 years old in November 1974.

In 1918, in the year that Joseph Mazner was born, in July, Russian revolutionaries executed the former Tzar Nicholas II and his immediate family. While it was rumored that two of the children had survived, it was later proven through DNA analysis - when their bodies were found - that the entire family had been killed.

In 1924, Joseph was just 6 years old when on January 21st, Vladimir Lenin, a leader of the Russian Revolution and the first leader of the Soviet Union died. He had survived two assassination attempts but had subsequent physical problems, suffering 3 strokes. He was in such great pain, it is said that he asked Stalin to poison him. The circumstances of his death are still disputed. He did oppose Stalin as the next leader - nonetheless, Stalin won a power struggle and ruled as a Soviet dictator until his death in 1953.
