Joseph Menegus is the son of Elias and Eugene Menegus. He was born on June 22, 1922 in Cadoce, Italy and had younger siblings Elia, Bertha, and Richard Menegus. He and his family immigrated to the states and lived in Belvidere, Warren, New Jersey. On June 30, 1942, at the age of 20, Joseph registered for the military draft in Belvidere, Passaic, New Jersey. Joseph was described as having a height of 5'6" and weighing 160 pounds. He had a light complexion, brown hair, and brown eyes. On December 29, 1942, Joseph Menegus enlisted in the United States military in Newark, New Jersey. He joined the Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers component of the Army. At the time of enlistment, Joseph held the rank of Private as part of the Selectees (Enlisted Men) group. He married Annabelle Menegus and they had sons Harry, David, and Walter Joseph Menegus.
