Joseph Roy Casteel is the son of William Benson Casteel and Daisy Louanna Peoples. He was white. His mother Daisy was born on April 29, 1888 in Tennessee, USA. She married William on February 26, 1905 in Scott, Virginia, USA and the couple resided in Gladeville, Wise, Virginia, USA. They later moved to Rocky Station, Lee, Virginia, USA and then Daisy passed away on March 11, 1964 in Jefferson County, West Virginia, USA. His father William was born in January of 1875 in Scott, Virginia, USA and grew up in De Kalb, Scott, Virginia, USA. He first married Malinda Dorcas Owens (1889–1947) on April 22, 1898 in Scott, Virginia, USA. Their marriage was short and he later re married on Daisy in 1905. He and Daisy later resided in Rocky Station, Lee, Virginia where William was a miner. He passed away on November 5, 1949 in Jefferson County, West Virginia, USA.
