  • Introduction

    Joseph's parents were Stephen "Steve" Patcella, 1862-1927, born in Homonna Slovakia and Susan Karabin Patcella, 1870-1938, also born in Homonna Slovakia. He had siblings Mary, Anna, John, Andrew, Stephen, Michael "Abe", Catherine and "private". His wife was Anastasia "Stasia" (Prescavage) Patcella, 1910-2006, and they had children Alice, Ann, and Joseph. In the 1910 census, Joseph was 2 yrs old and living with his parents and siblings Annie, John, Andrew, Michael, and Stephen Jr. All of the children were born in PA. Steve has immigrated in 1882 and Susie had immigrated in 1890. The entire household spoke English. Steve was a section hand for the railroad and George was a slate-picker(?)/ breaker Everyone but Joseph and Michael (the 2 youngest) could read and write. In the 1920 census, Joseph was now in school. Daughter Katie had been born and was now age 9, and Steve, John, Andrew, Steve Jr, and Michael were all working in the coal industry (the two youngest as slate pickers, the others as laborers). Also in the household were Mary Hendrick (listed as daughter), servant, and Andrew and Elizabeth Hendrick, listed as grandchildren. In the 1940 census, Joseph, age 32, and Stasia, age 29, were married and had children Alice, 10, and Joseph Jr., 5. Joseph was a truck driver. Joseph was survived by his wife, 3 children, 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and a sister.
