Joseph Anthony Sassone was born to Paolo Paul Nicola Sassone (born 1860) and Maria Antonia Serardi (1865 - 1924). Both of his parents were born in Italy. Joseph had two sisters: Rosa (born 1890) and Josephine Sassone (1892 - 1967). Joseph Sassone married Evelyn Elizabeth Blatchford (1922 - 1997) on October 29, 1946 in Seabrook, New Hampshire and they had one son, Philip F. "Phil" Sassone (1953 - 2015) and a daughter, Mary Antoinette Sassone. He then married Anna Sassone Craig Vasi (1908 - 1984).

Joseph was Caucasian of Italian heritage on his maternal and paternal lines. Both of his parents were born in Italy.

Born in Italy, Joseph arrived in the United States at age 5 in 1906. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1927, at age 26. Joseph lived in Massachusetts the rest of his life, dying in Gloucester in 1966 at the age of 65.

On his World War II draft card, dated February, 1942, Joseph was 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighed 170 pounds. He had brown eyes, gray hair, and a "dark brown" complexion. Joseph married Evelyn and they had two children, a son and a daughter: Paul and Mary. He then married Anna N. Sassone Craig Vasi.
