Joseph Spence Walker's History: circa 1943

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Joseph Spence Walker, known as ;Little Jock', shot himself with a Sten gun shortly after midnight on new year's day 1943. He was found by three airmen who carried him inside a Nissen hut. My father, who was stationed there, called for medical help. Jock died an hour later. There were said to be 'family problems'. My father has always wondered about the reasons for his death. His name sounds Scottish, and new year is of great importance to the Scots. Had he been hoping for news which did not come? Could he simply not face another year? It is interesting that he was not taken home for burial, but was buried locally, and that, being a suicide, he was buried in the churchyard, as sometimes there were rules about those who took their own lives not being buried in hallowed ground. RIP Jock, any further information greatly appreciated.
