Joseph Udall Leek was born on October 22, 1809 in Islip, Suffolk County, New York United States to Elias Leek and Keziah Ann Muncy, and had siblings Benjamin Leek, Sarah Ann Leek, Rachel Leek, Walter Leek, Clarissa Leek, Conklin Weeks Leek, and Elias Leek. He married Phoebe Oakley, and had children George A. Leek, Mary Ester Leek, Henry Oakley Leek, and Joseph P. Leek. Joseph Leek died at age 58 years old on April 6, 1868 in East Jamaica.

In 1815, at the age of only 6 years old, Joseph was alive when between April 5th and 12th, Mount Tambora in the Dutch East Indies erupted, killing over 92,000 people and propelling volcanic ash into the upper atmosphere throughout the world. This caused what was called "The Year Without a Summer." In some places in the northern hemisphere, the eruption caused snow in June and July. There were widespread crop failures and resulting starvation in many parts of the world.
