  • Introduction

    Joseph passed away, before I was born. My Great Great GrandFather. When he arrived in Victoria on "The White Swallow". Joseph and 10 other seamen, jumped ship. They then all had a bounty put on their head, of 3pound each. They went off to work in the mines, married, had families and settled. Joseph had become an American citizen about 1 month before he came to Australia.

    Nil. Worked around his parents Farm. They were very poor Farmers. Left home around 14 years . Migrated with Brothers to Martha's Vineyard . Little island off USA . Then moved onto the mainland of the USA. He could not read or write.

    No for Joseph, but yes for his 2 Youngest sons.WW1: His Youngest, Vincent was killed in action at the Dardenelles. His body never recovered. His brother , Peter Herbert came back to Australia.
  • Professional Career

    At 14 years old Joseph started as deck hand on Clippers in Boston, USA. In 1854 he went on, to be to become a Sea Man. 1855, he arrived at the Quarantine Station, Sorrento, Victoria. With a 3 pound bounty on his head he moved inland, Victoria. He and his 10 mates and brothers, headed to the mines and he became a miner in Victoria. Australia.
  • Personal Life & Family

    He did become a member of the Freemasons and when he received his Sash, had a beautiful photo taken. The photo hung on the wall of the Freemasons Hall. After he died an un named family member picked up his photo from the hall, and it was then, never shared. We have no idea where the photo ended up eventually.

He was brave. coming to Australia in Feb 1855. He worked as a seaman and as a deck hand.. He travelled from Boston to Blairgowrie - Sorrento, Victoria. Aust. 11 other men jumped ship as well as Joseph V Silva. He worked in the mines, hoping to find gold. But he did find a Wife. Catherine Brogan. Together they had a Son, William Brogan. Then they married in the C of E Church , Carisbrook. Victoria in 1870. Joseph is the Patriarch of our Total Silva Family. A Hard life, but forever grateful. It is now 8 July 2015. Great Great Granddaughter, Lyn Silva.
