Joseph Warren was born on September 11, 1841 in Canaan, Somerset County, Maine United States to Hiram C. Warren and Rowana Combs, and had siblings Adrastus Combs Warren, Sarah Elisabeth Warren, Mary R. Warren, and Erastus Willard Warren. He married Maria Harris, and died at age 81 years old on February 20, 1923 in Oakland, Alameda County, CA. Joseph Warren was buried on February 23, 1923 at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland.

In 1841, in the year that Joseph Warren was born, on February 4th, James Morris wrote about Groundhog Day in his diary - the first known reference to the day in North America. He wrote: "Last Tuesday, the 2nd, was Candlemas day, the day on which, according to the Germans, the Groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another six weeks nap, but if the day be cloudy he remains out, as the weather is to be moderate."
