    Joseph William Letwin is the son of Joseph Clyde Lawton (1886-1979) and Mary Elizabeth Ewing (1896-1946). He was born on March 1, 1924 in Sunbury, Northumberland, Pennsylvania, USA and grew up there. His draft registration occurred on 30th June 1942 when he was 18 years old. At the time of registration. He was employed by P P and L (likely Pennsylvania Power and Light Company). Joseph later enlisted on the 23rd April 1943 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was classified under "Selectees (Enlisted Men)," which referred to individuals who were selected for military service through the Selective Service System.He served in the United States Army during World War II. His military service spanned from 23rd April 1943 to 14th February 1946. On October 23, 1948 he married Marie Louise Malisheski (1927–1994) at St Michael Archangel Church in Sunbury, Pennsylvania. The couple had two sons together.
