In 1864, in the year that Josephine Kiely was born, on February 25th, the first prisoners arrived at Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Andersonville became notorious for the conditions that Union prisoners endured. 500 prisoners had left from Richmond, Virginia the week before - eventually 13,000 prisoners would die at the prison.

In 1892, she was 28 years old when on August 4th, the father and stepmother of Lizzie Borden were found murdered. Lizzie was accused of the crime and on June 20th of the next year, she was acquitted of murder by a jury. But she was never acquitted in the public mind.
