“A PIONEER BUSINESS MAN PASSES AWAY. Life of Mr. Joshua Chatterson Ends. After Several Years of Ill Health—I. O. O. F. Funeral Services. In the death of Mr. Joshua Chatterson, who died at the family home in Three Oaks last week Sunday, we lost one of the oldest of our citizens: a man, until recent years, prominent in the business and political life of the village. Mr. Chatterson, the youngest of his family, was a native of New York and was born Dec. 1, 1843, in the city of Utica. Since 1870 he had made his home in the vicinity of Three Oaks. In 1861 he enlisted as a soldier at Green Bay, Wis., and was mustered out of service at the close of the war of the rebellion. The following year he married Miss Amelia Spencer of Dowagiac and to them eight children were born, only three of whom survive their father: one daughter, Mrs. Leno Root of Detroit, and two sons, Munroe and Benjamin, both of Three Oaks. Mrs. Chatterson died eight or nine years ago. A second marriage was to Mrs. Amanda Hattel of Goshen, lnd., who also survives the deceased. Mr. Chatterson entered business life soon after his arrival in this village, where he was in partnership with Mr. Joseph Friedel in what was known for many years as the Chatterson & Friedel hardware store. About nine years ago he purchased Mr. Friedel's interest in the business, which he conducted alone until July, 1899, when he sold the stock to Mr. E. G. Hamlin and retired from active business life, other than that of acting as justice of the peace and notary and soliciting fire insurance. Mr. Chatterson was a prominent Democrat and for many years enjoyed considerable influence among the voters vicinity. The obsequies were held January 27 at the late home of the deceased, being attended by the local lodge of Odd Fellows and G. A. R., besides a large concourse of relatives and friends. Rev. C. E. Deal of the Methodist Episcopal church, of which Mr. Chatterson was a member, preached the sermon, and a quartet composed of the Misses Fisher and Messrs. Morehouse and Kramer, sang "Asleep in Jesus", "It is Not Death to Die", and "Thy Will Be Done." Interment was made in Forest Lawn cemetery.” From The Acorn, page 1, February 5, 1904
