Josie Grover French Sr of Alabama was born on October 28, 1888 to Andrew Jackson French and Clara Wilson French. Josie French had siblings Mary Ann H (French) Cook, Nonie (French) Kennemer, Cleveland Edward French, and Lottie (French) Kennemer. He married Maude French in 1907, and they were married until Maude's death in March 1974. They had children Mattie Clara (French) Bridges, Lorene L (French) Champion, and Bonnie Mae (French) Daniel. He married Grace Virginia (Williams) Tyler in 1925, and they were married until Josie's death in January 1966. They had children Josie Grover French Jr and Paula Jean (French) Humphreys.

In 1888, in the year that Josie Grover French Sr was born, on July 25th, a court stenographer from Salt Lake City - Frank Edward McGurrin - decisively beat the competition in a typing contest in Ohio. He was supposedly the only person who used touch typing and is believed to have invented the method. Touch typing is ubiquitous now - but Frank's win is what convinced everyone that the method was good!

In 1907, at the age of 19 years old, Josie was alive when the second Hague peace conference was called by Russia in the Netherlands. While nothing was settled regarding the matter of peace among nations, many resolutions were passed (and accepted by many nations) about the conventions of war - especially the protection of noncombatants.
