This is my father, Jules CHARLES SPENCER Wolk. Spencer was his God name for the Catholic priest who was his Godfather and who taught him the Catholic faith. His father was born in Poland while occupied by Russia. His father was Russian and French. His Grandmother French. His father was raised in France and he later came to America where he settled in San Francisco, CA. In The French Quarter. My father grew up there. His father was a Tailor. Tjhe skill taught to him by his mother who was a seamstress back in France. I do not know what happened to her husband or how he passed on but it seems my grandfather was raised predominantly by his mother, in France. His Father practiced tailoring in San Francisco while raising his family of 7 children. Namely Ida Catherine, Beatrice, Blanche, Emile or ( Ed) for short, George, Joseph and my dad
, Jules CHARLES. I don't know the others middle names at present. Both my dad and his dad tried to enter the Military but we're rejected because they were both to short, 5'1", ea and color blind but my Grandfather served his country as a Tailor at 5he " Persidio" Making uniforms for our great officers ie General Pershing, to name one. He was very proud of this fact and we are proud to tell of this too. My father never served but worked at various jobs in the city of S F. he once owned a bar with his brother George and later a tree trimming bus. Then as a Cab Driver, having once given a ride to Elenor Roosevelt. Still later, after a divorce to his 2nd wife. He became very depressed but was looking for work and found an ad in the paper for a job as a Prison Guard at San Quentin. He told me he didn't care if he lived or died so figured this was 5he job for him as he would not be afraid- and he was right. He worked there x 15 yrs and survived unscathed, Thank God. There was 1 attempt on his life which resulted in a double hernia and hospitalization. This attempt was meant for another guard who called in sick that day ( he knew). My dad was called in on his day off but the convicts respected him as he treated them fairly. They tried to warn him but it was to late. They had mopped the 3rd tier w cooking oil hoping the other guy would skip and go under the rail and drop to his death 3 stories down but my dad got it instead. He grabbed the rail to break his fall and this resulted in the double hernia. More another time. Must go for now. I love you daddy
