Karl (Carl) Fischer 1861 - 1933

Karl Fischer was born in 1861 in Mlada Boleslav, Mladá Boleslav District County, Central Bohemian Region Czech Republic to Aron Fischer and Rosalia Fischer, and had a sister Paula Pauline Krause. He married Charlotte "Lotte" Kollek Fischer, and had children Bertha Nascher Meller, Gertrude Glas, Emil Fischer, Margarethe 'Greta 'Fischer, and Heda Loria. Karl Fischer died at age 71 years old on November 21, 1933.

In 1861, in the year that Karl (Carl) Fischer was born, on August 5th, in order to help pay for the Civil War, the Federal government instituted the first income tax in the United States. The Revenue Act of 1861 was rescinded in 1862 but from 1861 through 1862, a flat tax was charged - 3% - on all income over $800, which included only 3% of households. In 1862, a broader tax was enacted.

In 1876, at the age of just 15 years old, Karl was alive when on November 2nd, a giant squid - a little over 20 feet long - washed up on a beach at Thimble Tickle Bay in Newfoundland. It's still a rare occurrence since giant squid live in deep sea at 1000 to 3000 foot depth.
